When the People Helping Others Need Support Too

When we think about solicitors and legal professionals, we often picture people helping others through some of life's biggest moments.

Whether it's writing a Will, administering an estate, dealing with probate, or supporting families after a bereavement, legal professionals are regularly helping people navigate emotional, stressful and often life-changing situations.

But a recent report from The Solicitors' Charity has highlighted an important reminder: the people supporting others are not immune to pressures themselves. In fact, demand for wellbeing support among solicitors has tripled in the last three years.

The report found that many legal professionals are facing overlapping challenges affecting their emotional, financial, professional and physical wellbeing. Rather than dealing with one isolated issue, many are managing multiple pressures at once, both inside and outside of work.

The Emotional Weight of Legal Work

It's perhaps not surprising. Many areas of law involve supporting people through difficult periods of their lives. In the world of Wills and Probate, conversations often centre around illness, death, family relationships, financial worries and future planning.

While legal professionals are trained to provide advice and guidance, they are still human beings. Listening to difficult stories, supporting grieving families and helping clients make important decisions can carry an emotional weight that often goes unseen.

The report also highlighted that increasing numbers of working-age solicitors, particularly women, are seeking support.

Looking After the People Who Look After Others

The findings from The Solicitors' Charity are an important reminder of the need to prioritise wellbeing across the legal profession.

Supporting people through life's biggest challenges requires not only expertise but also resilience, empathy and emotional energy. Ensuring legal professionals have access to the right support helps create a healthier profession and ultimately better outcomes for the people they serve.

When the people helping others are supported themselves, everyone benefits.
