How Often Do Newly Qualified Lawyers Worry About Money?

Money worries don’t care how old you are, what job you do, or how “sorted” your life looks from the outside. So when we asked newly qualified lawyers:
“How often do you worry about money?”
Here’s what they told us:
10% worry about money daily
50% worry weekly
40% worry rarely
At first glance, it looks like most apprentices aren’t worrying every day, which is great. But the fact that 6 in 10 think about money worries at least once a week tells us something important:
Money is on young professionals’ minds far more than they let on.

Money Worry Is Quiet But Constant
One thing we hear again and again is that money stress doesn’t always look like panic. It often looks like:
A late-night “quick check” of your bank balance
Overthinking upcoming bills or rent
Feeling guilty about buying a coffee
Wondering if you're saving “enough”
Not being sure what’s normal anymore
Why 60% Worrying Weekly Is a Big Deal
NQ's are juggling a lot: full-time work, deadlines, commuting, social expectations, and the pressure to appear organised and professional.
Add money uncertainty to that mix, and it becomes another invisible layer of stress.
And here’s the thing:
Money is one of the biggest contributors to stress for young people but one of the least talked about.
The workplace isn’t always the space to ask questions. School didn’t teach this stuff. Parents often don’t talk about it. And friends are usually in the same boat.
So young professionals end up thinking it’s “just them”.
Money Worry Is Fixable.
Not overnight. Not with magic. But with support, understanding, and real-life financial education that actually makes sense.
That’s what we do at Mrs Penny. We talk about money in a way that feels:
✔ human
✔ non-judgemental
✔ clear
✔ and actually helpful
When newly qualified professionals understand the basics of budgeting, payslips, pensions, planning, weekly money worries turn into monthly check-ins… and eventually into confidence.
Why We’re Doing This Research
Because behind every percentage, there’s a person trying their best.
Our goal isn’t just to share stats. It’s to understand what NQs need so employers can support them better and so apprentices can feel empowered, not embarrassed, when it comes to their money.
And if newly qualified, reading this: You’re not alone. You’re not “bad” with money. You’re simply learning something most adults were never taught.
